X33
Brass (40%Zn)

Composición: Cu-40%Zn.
Processing: Hot extrusion and slight cold stretching.
Etching: 60 s immersion in FeCl3 alcoholic solution.
Plastic deformation of biphasic alloys has specific characteristics that are not observed for deformation of monophasic systems. For instance, α + β (60/40) brasses show different microstructrures depending on the temperature of extrusion. A banded structure is obtained when deformation is performed in the biphasic α + β field (see first two micrographs). On the other hand, a Widmanstätten structure is obtained after deformation in the β field. Grains of this phase get elongated during deformation and, upon cooling, needles of α precipitate within the β grains.
