The microstuctures after nital etching reveal a banded ferritic-pearlitic structure and long inclusions. One of the micrographs shows the transition zone from ferrite-pearlite (right) to tempered martensite (left). One of the micrographs shows the region of tempered martensite at higher magnification.
Inclusions are already visible in the non-etched specimen. They correspond to Fe-/Mn-rich silicates. At higher magnification, MnS inclusions are also revealed. The ASTM E45 standard can be used to quantify and indentify the different types of inclusions.
