The digital transformation of access to “audiovisual works” in the European market: Streaming platforms as an opportunity?
Prof. in charge | Loreto CORREDOIRA |
Typology | Seminar |
Description |
Based on Professor Corredoira’s experience of Hollywood’s transition to “window management” business models and rights management, this course seeks to explore how the European media industry is adopting the business model of sites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. The arrival of “digital distributors” (some from the US such as Hulu, Netflix and iTunes, and others from the EU such as Filmin, Filmotech, RTVE.es and ARD Mediathek) on the digital media landscape has given an impetus to substantial changes in the television and movie industry. While the observed growth of the new streaming models is definitely encouraging, the question remains as to whether new media forms are promoting the European audiovisual industry and whether or not EU policies regarding the audiovisual market are effective enough.
Syllabus Study of selected cases of digitization in the European digital market over the last ten years. Analysis of four film-distribution platforms and their impact on European audiovisual heritage. These platforms will be selected (and changed or compared) every other year, depending on the market situation, and the following aspects of them will be analysed:

This will be a highly specialized seminar for postgraduate students (master’s students, as well as Journalism and Television PhD students and Film PhD students). Postgraduates are also invited to continue their master’s specialization to collaborate with this Chair’s research project to also deliver at least one set of “data analysis results” per year.
This seminar is connected to Research Activity nr. 1 and Deliverable nr. 2. We will update our research and previous papers and technical notes (referenced below) to incorporate European VOD platforms and Europe-based platforms distributing digital film and television content.
We will release report (see Deliverable nº 4) as this one we wrote in 2015: Sood, S., Corredoira, L., Villanueva JL (Harvard-IESE) Technical Note MN-384-E to be published in a JCR or Scopus journal. https://store.hbr.org/product/the-impact-of-digital-technologies-on-the-paid-content-market-examining-the-netflix-paradigm/IES503 |
