PhD

Follow-up of PhD Students

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

Once the PhD student has been admitted to the doctoral program, during the first year and within a maximum period of three months after registration, the PhD title and the name of the supervisor designated for the research work should be registered. This will be done at the Secretariat of the Faculty of Philology through the form 057 duly completed, according to its 3 copies. See: https://edoctorado.ucm.es/impresosydocumentacion

When registering the thesis, the PhD student will also have to sign a Documentary Commitment of Supervision. View and download the file from:  https://edoctorado.ucm.es/compromiso-documental

Before the end of his first year, the doctoral student will have elaborated a Research Plan which can be improved and detailed throughout his permanence in the program. This project, with the methodology that will be used and the objectives to be achieved, will be approved by the tutor and / or the thesis supervisor.

If the development of research weren’t adequate, the student would have the opportunity to modify in RAPI2 this first proposal by presenting a new project, in agreement with its supervisor and with the approval of the Academic Commission of the program.

From the first year of permanence in the program, the PhD student must record in electronic format and in the RAPI2 application —to which he will have access after the registration of the PhD thesis title— the Personalized Document of Activities. This document will record all the mandatory training activities carried out by the student, as well as others that may be of interest for the proper development of the Doctoral thesis. This document will be regularly reviewed by the tutor and / or the PhD supervisor and evaluated by the Academic Commission responsible for the PhD program in French Studies. Each year the application is closed and reopened to record the activities of the next class.

On the occasion of the reading and defense of the PhD thesis, the doctoral student will be required to accredit all his training activities through a certificate, which can be obtained from the RAPI2 application and will be signed by his tutor and his supervisor.

The Academic Committee will evaluate each year the Research Plan and the activity register, as well as the tutor and supervisor reports for this purpose. The positive evaluation of the commission is an indispensable requirement to continue in the PhD Program.

Le Pont Neuf, à Paris

The “Pont Neuf”, World Heritage in 1991, joins since the 16th century the two banks of the Seine, the favorite watercourse of writers like Balzac, Flaubert and Zola or of painters like Renoir and Pissarro.

PhD thesis supervision

The supervisor will be the main responsible for the coherence and relevance of training activities, the impact and novelty in his field of PhD thesis topic, and the guidance in the planning and its adaptation to other projects and activities in which the student may be involved.

The PhD thesis may be co-supervised by a maximum of three supervisors.

PhD students will hold regular sessions with their supervisor (s) throughout each semester, which can be recorded in the RAPI2 activity document.

They will include issues such as the PhD project, the research progress, possible publication strategies, the contents of possible PhD student publications, and the presentation of papers and communications in conferences. From the 5th semester those sessions will also be about the thesis defense and CV preparation for the integration of the PhD student in the job market.

At each meeting, the student must provide an abstract of the work done since the previous meeting and the updated project outline. In each meeting,
the goals to be achieved in the following period will be set.

Students will clearly identify the value of what has been done until then and the immediate objectives.
