Call for Applications for Admission to Doctoral Programs 2025–26

Application period: from May 12 to September 17, 2025


Generally, the student who considers applying for the PhD Programme, must have obtained a Grado degree (or equivalent) and a Master degree. For further information (in Spanish) click here. The students who meet the following requirements will be likewise accepted. 

 

ACCESS

Student profile
  • Student profile 1 (recommended). Students who have obtained an undergraduate degree (licenciatura, grado or equivalent) and a postgraduate degree (master or PhD) in Philology, Linguistics, Translation or Literature in French or another language.

  • Student profile 2. Students who have obtained an undergraduate degree (licenciatura, grado or equivalent) and a postgraduate degree (master or PhD) in Arts, Humanities, Social and Juridical Sciences. These students might have to realize complementary training.

  • Student profile 3. Students with no specific postgraduate degree in the areas mentioned above (Philology or similar). Their admission will be considered by the Academic Commission. These students might have to realize complementary training.

Selection criteria

As well as the general requirements in order to apply for the PhD in French Studies, students must include:

Applicants must submit their CV along with a motivation letter explaining their reasons for pursuing a PhD within the Doctoral Programme in French Studies. The letter should also indicate the specific topic the applicant wishes to research or, if not yet defined, the general field of interest (theoretical or applied French linguistics, related areas, French or comparative literature, etc.). The proposed research should align with the objectives of the programme.

Applicants may also include with their application any supporting documents that demonstrate relevant merits they consider important for their admission to this PhD programme.

Required previous knowledge

All students must certify (by an official institution) a B2 French language level, according to the CEFR.

If students do not speak Spanish as their mother tongue, they will have to certify a B2 Spanish language level according to the CEFR.

 

 


Complementary training

The courses to take as complementary training are the following:

  • 400056 Destrezas avanzadas en Francés II
  • 400067 Análisis Lingüístico de Textos Franceses
  • 600106 Tendencias culturales y literarias en la Francia contemporánea
  • 600104 Francofonía y literaturas francófonas

Students who require additional training will meet with their assigned supervisor to determine the most appropriate subjects to address any gaps in their academic background.

Selection Criteria

The selection of applicants pre-registered for the PhD Programme in French Studies will follow the principles of objectivity, impartiality, merit, and ability. The selection will be carried out with the consensus of the PhD Academic Committee and with full transparency.

Priority will be given to candidates whose academic background aligns with the recommended entry profile.

Proficiency in the French language, as well as in Spanish, will be verified, as specified in the section on required prior knowledge.

The candidate’s full academic record will be reviewed, with particular attention to postgraduate work relevant to the specific nature of the doctoral programme.

Note: The PhD Academic Committee in French Studies, responsible for the admission process, may conduct an interview with candidates when deemed appropriate, in order to provide a more accurate and personalised assessment of the merits presented. This interview may take place in person, by videoconference, or through similar means.
