Thesis submission and evaluation
The procedure for submitting and evaluating doctoral theses is dictated by RD 99/2011 and the regulations that implement it at each of the participating universities.
Thesis with international mention
The doctoral program facilitates the completion of theses with an international mention. The doctoral degree may include an "International Doctor” mention on the front of the certificate if the student satisfies the following requirements (RD 99/2011):
- A minimum three-month placement outside of Spain at a prestigious higher education institution or research centre, studying or carrying out research.
- Part of the doctoral thesis (for example, the summary and conclusions) must be written and presented in one of the languages commonly used for scientific communication in the relevant field of knowledge, which does not include any of Spain’s official languages. This rule does not apply when the stays, reports and experts come from a Spanish-speaking country.
- Prior to its reading, the thesis must be evaluated by a minimum of two expert doctors belonging to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute.
- At least one expert doctor belonging to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research centre (other than the person responsible for the student’s stay abroad) must form part of the thesis evaluation panel.
