Academic activities and faculty

The central element of the doctoral programme is the completion of the doctoral thesis. Additionally, each university may organise their own academic activities. Generally speaking, the programme is built around research seminars and interuniversity workshops. Doctoral students are also expected to participate in conferences and symposiums outside of the programme. All students (both part-time and full-time) must record their academic activities in the doctoral student’s Activities Document.

Research seminars

At least once per quarter, the doctoral students at each of the seven universities organise a three-hour seminar where the students present and debate the progress and results of their ongoing research. The students must give an individual presentation at least once a year for every year they are in the programme. These presentations are a mandatory requirement of the course prior to the defence of the doctoral thesis.

Interuniversity Workshops

Every two years, one of the universities participating in the doctoral program organises an Interuniversity Workshop. They are intended to promote internal cohesion and the sharing of scientific knowledge among the doctoral students from the various universities, and provide a framework to exchange and respectfully compare ideas. The workshops primarily revolve around the research being conducted by the doctoral students themselves, which will be presented and debated.

This activity is optional. Students will be encouraged to participate in the course of their first two years in the programme (the first three years in the case of part-time students) so that they can present their research and have it critically reviewed before writing their doctoral thesis.

Conferences and symposiums

All doctoral students should attend at least one conference or symposium per year, if possible, to give a presentation or a lecture.

Mobility scheme: Stays abroad

The new regulatory law for doctoral studies, RD 99/2011, provides for the possibility of obtaining an “International Doctorate” mention. To earn it, in addition to meeting other conditions, the doctoral student must spend a minimum of three months outside of Spain either studying or conducting research. The Academic Committee recommends the completion of a stay abroad to promote and improve the intellectual maturity of doctoral students and their research resources. However, it is only compulsory for those researchers wishing to obtain the International Doctorate mention.
