While mobile communication applications may appear less physically intimidating, they have complicated the dynamics of building successful interpersonal relationships. This workshop will explore how a group of 80 British and Spanish university students navigate hostile interactions on WhatsApp through real-life examples. Participants will learn about the distinct topic management strategies these students use to initiate, sustain, and escalate conflicts. By engaging with various linguistic strategies, participants will gain insights into how to interpret and negotiate the intended meanings of others during interactions. Additionally, the workshop will encourage collaborative discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural differences in communication styles and conflict resolution.
