Fernando  de los Ríos (1879-1949)

 

After graduating in Law from the University of Madrid in 1901, he joined the Free Learning Institution. In 1907, he earned his PhD and in 1911 he accepted a position as Professor of Political Law at the University of Granada. Later, in 1930, he would hold the same position in Madrid.

He was elected Member of Parliament for several terms in office and served as Minister of Justice, Public Education and State in various Republican Cabinets. Fernando de los Ríos held the position of Rector for only a short period of time in 1936. 

He was in Geneva at the outbreak of Spanish Civil War and went into exile in the United States where he served as the Spanish ambassador.
