King Jaime I 2018 Awards. Conference Univ. Jaume I
Maria Vallet Regí, professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid and winner of the King James I 2018 Prize for Basic Research, gave the third lecture at the Ciutat de Castelló Chair of the Jaume I University last Monday in the Menador espai cultural space building.
Professor Vallet, an honorary doctorate from the UJI, spoke about research and development in the field of nanomaterials and the different lines of applications, from new communication technologies, architecture, ceramics or the health sector.
In the conference, entitled "Nanotechnology in our day-to-day life", Maria Vallet highlighted that the advance in nanomaterial research has allowed our society to evolve from large computers or huge mobile phones, to USB sticks that have a very large storage capacity or small format mobile devices that allow us to communicate in many different ways.
In addition, the professor commented that the use of nanomaterials applied to pharmacy and medicine has allowed the design of specific antibiotics and more localized medical treatments, which ensures that other parts of the body are not affected but only the damaged part. She stressed the great expense involved in designing a new drug, which takes between 7 and 20 years to reach the market, and "the monetary investment to be made is equivalent, more or less, to the cost of six AIRBUS planes," said the professor.
Finally, Maria Vallet presented other examples of the use of nanomaterials, such as the design of nanostructures from graphite to reinforce architectural structures such as bridges; or the use of nanomaterials in ceramics applying a layer of nanoparticles so that the tile has, for example, an anti-fog treatment, etc.

Sandra Montalvo successfully defended her PhD thesis
Sandra Montalvo Quirós successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of New Nanosystems for Applications in Biomedicine".
This doctoral thesis has been focused on the development of nanosystems suitable against pathologies such as tuberculosis and cancer. A multidisciplinary approach has been carried out, from the synthesis and characterization of the designed nanosystems to their in vitro evaluation through bioanalytical strategies such as quantitative proteomics.
The obtained nanosystems combine mesoporous silica nanoparticles with proteins and/or metal nanoparticles, finally obtaining organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials.
In the case of cancer, the attached proteins have the ability to target tumour cells to selectively transport and deliver silver nanoparticles as therapy.
In the case of tuberculosis, the proteins possess immunomodulatory capacity, which gives the nanosystem the possibility of acting as a preventive vaccine. Nanosystems that incorporate silver or silver bromide nanoparticles with bactericidal capacity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis are also proposed.

María Natividad Gómez Cerezo successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Mesoporous bioactive glasses for the treatment of bone pathologies"
This doctoral thesis has been focused on the obtain mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) to be used in the treatment of pathologies associated with bone tissue. This objective has been addressed through three strategies:
1. Optimization of chemical properties and porous structure to determine the most suitable chemical compositions and textural properties for the proposed purposes.
2. Obtaining regenerative MBGs for secondary treatment or prevention of bone tumors and bone infections.
3. Obtaining macroporous scaffolding of MBG for bone regeneration in osteoporotic patients.

María Rocío Villegas Díaz, member of GIBI research group, successfully completed his PhD
María Rocío Villegas Díaz successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Hybrid Nanocarriers for the Selective Treatment of Complex Diseases"
This doctoral thesis has been focused on the development of nanosystems suitable for the treatment of two types of diseases: Cancer and Fibrosis.
- Polymeric nanocapsules able to house collagenase maintaining unaltered the catalytic capacity of the enzyme were designed with pH-responsive behavior in order to release the enzyme in tumoral tissues.
- Nanocarriers decorated with three different gadgets (Multifunctional Protocells): a lipid bilayer which avoids the drug premature release, collagenase nanocapsules for enhancing their penetration and targeting moieties for tumoral cell recognition, have been produced.
- Nanocarriers asymmetrically decorated with two targeting moieties in order to provide a sequential capacity to recognize tumoral cells and then, the inner mitochondria were produced.
- Finally, the treatment of fibrotic lesions with collagenase nanocapsules was addressed. Nanocapsules able to provide a prolonged and sustained collagenase release during more than 1 week were designed and obtained. A single injection of these collagenase nanocapsules showed a produced therapeutic effect while the conventional treatment barely produced any effect. These nanocapsules has been protected by a European Patent and their clinical application is currently under study.
