University Institutes

Departments and Research Groups

The Institute of Knowledge Technology is made up of researchers from various departments of the Complutense University of Madrid, from different faculties. The Institute is the meeting point to promote multidisciplinary research for the advancement of knowledge technologies and their applications in different areas of social interest.

Department of Psychobiology and Methodology in Behavioural Sciences

This department has a multidisciplinary character, oriented towards these two branches of research. Its work has been very important for the Institute since its foundation, with Professor Luis Jáñez leading one of the most active research groups, both in terms of the projects developed and the training activities:

Department of Computer Architecture and Automation

The Department of Computer Architecture and Automatics (DACYA) has, as its name indicates, activity in two areas of knowledge. On the one hand in Computer Architecture and Technology and the activity focuses on the design and implementation of digital information processing systems, and their efficient application in terms of performance, energy consumption and cost. The different groups in the department cover topics such as adaptive and bio-inspired hardware and software systems, high-performance computing, processor and memory hierarchy design, embedded systems, distributed and parallel computing technologies and their applications to commercial and scientific problems. Research is also carried out in the field of dynamically reconfigurable hardware. In the area of Automatics, activities are carried out in the fields of control and automatic engineering systems and robotics.

At present, the research groups attached to the department with a presence at the Institute of Knowledge Technology are:

Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence Department

The Department of Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence (DISIA) focuses its activity on the development of applications based on Artificial Intelligence and distributed processing techniques. This requires the use of software engineering methodologies to manage the development processes of intelligent systems and architectures that facilitate the integration of distributed components and services. It currently includes research lines in computational creativity, knowledge representation, natural language processing and generation, accessibility, multi-agent systems, intelligent access to information and advanced methods of interaction between people and computer applications. It comprises several research groups, with active participation in the Institute:

Computer Systems and Informatics Department

The Department of Computer Systems and Informatics (DSIC) has extensive experience in the study and development of rigorous techniques that guarantee the correctness of the design of software systems. Its main lines of research include system specification, verification and testing techniques, static analysis of programs, design and implementation of declarative programming languages, models for distributed environments, programme optimisation techniques and the development of secure systems based on models. At the Institute of Knowledge Technology he participates with the research group:

Department of Communication Theories and Analysis

The Department of Theories and Analysis of Communication (TAC) is an inter-area department created in 1987, which currently has 44 professors, whose main teaching and research areas focus on advertising, public relations and audiovisual communication, as well as art, psychology and information technologies. The TAC teaches bachelor's, master's and master's degrees, and has an outstanding scientific activity in the organisation of all kinds of national and international scientific events. It maintains close scientific contact with universities and research groups all over the world. He also carries out consultancy, research and applied projects for different organisations through the Complutense Foundation. At the Instituto de Tecnología del Conocimiento he participates with the research group:

Department of Applied Communication Sciences

The Department of Applied Communication Sciences has scriptwriters, producers, film directors, television directors and directors of photography; specialists in multimedia and synthesis images; historians of cinema, radio, television, photography, comics and posters; specialists in audiovisual management, economics and promotion; and photographers. In the world of advertising, it has renowned specialists in corporate image and identity, creativity, advertising strategy and public relations, and the history of posters and advertising.

Department of Social Work and Social Services

The Department of Social Work and Social Services xxx. In the Institute of Knowledge Technology it participates with the research group:
