Emeritus Professor of Applied Mathematics at Autonomous University of Madrid and Honorary Professor at Complutense University of Madrid since 2018, author of more than 300 research articles.
His main distinctions include the 2003 Spanish National Prize for Research in Mathematics “Julio Rey Pastor”; being a Thomson Reuters ISI “Highly cited researcher” since 2003; Plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM2006), held in Madrid in 2006; Member of the inaugural class of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society in 2013; Academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain (RACEFyN), elected 2013; Académico correspondiente of Real Academia de Ciencias de Zaragoza, since June 2015; Doctor Honoris Causa from University of Oviedo in 2015; Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) since 2016 and Medal of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME) in 2018.
Research interests
Differential equations, especially nonlinear partial differential equations, and their applications to Physics and Engineering. Diffusion equations, filtration equations in porous media. Mathematical study of processes with free boundaries and change of phase. Special solutions, selfsimilarity and asymptotical methods. Blow-up problems and singularities. Nonlocal diffusion and fractional Laplacian operators. PDEs and Riemannian Geometry. Entropy methods and functional inequalities.
