16 October 2024. This October, Daniel Luis Rodríguez Vidanes was awarded second place in the Margarita Salas Award for Scientific and Technological Research of the year 2024 in the Basic Science category. These awards recognize the best doctoral theses defended in the Community of Madrid during the years 2022 and 2023 in the fields of experimental sciences, life sciences, and applied technology. The Margarita Salas Awards, in addition to the recognition and prestige they bring, are also endowed with significant monetary prizes (in this case, Daniel was awarded 12,000 euros). It should be noted that Daniel’s thesis was supervised by Krzysztof Chris Ciesielski, a current member of the IMI Scientific Committee, and by Gustavo Adolfo Muñoz Fernández and Juan Benigno Seoane Sepúlveda, current members of the IMI. The thesis was defended on October 25, 2023. Daniel was a member of the Interdisciplinary Mathematical Institute and its Institute Council during the period of his thesis preparation from 2020 to 2024.

5) Math Puzzle
Puzzle sent by Kjartan Poskitt.
The solution will be provided in the next issue of Boletin del IMI.
Solution to last issue's Math Puzzle, sent by Rik Tangerman and published on issue No. 146 of the Boletín del IMI:
Band-Aid
The total area is 5+2√5, which is approximately 9,47.
From similarity of the little triangle at the bottom left and the larger one containing one square we get 1/a=a/(a+1). This leads to a=φ (the Golden Ratio).
Now the large square side squared can be found using the Pythagorean Theorem as φ2+(φ+1)2=4φ+3= 5+2√5.
