 1) A Message from the IMI Director

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to inform you that Prof. Per H. Enflo, from Kent State University (USA) and member of the Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute (IMI) at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has just uploaded a detailed version of his 2023 paper containing the solution to the invariant subspace problem in Hilbert spaces (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invariant_subspace_problem) that was announced in the issue 91 of Boletín del IMI (https://doi.org/10.57037/b-imi.00091). For those interested, the arXiv link is https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.15442

As many of us know, Per is a very active and fruitful collaborator and coauthor of several IMI members and his work in Mathematics has led to new concepts, theories, problems, techniques and results in analysis and other areas (such as Mathematical Biology, Population Dynamics, Human Evolution, Population Genetics and Paleoanthropology).

Prof. Per H. Enflo

From IMI we congratulate Per for his Academic Achievements!

Ángel Manuel Ramos del Olmo

 6) Math Puzzle

Puzzle sent by Kjartan Poskitt.
The solution will be provided in the next issue of Boletin del IMI.

Solution to last week's Math Puzzle, sent by Rik Tangerman and published on issue No. 126 of the Boletín del IMI:

The ragged mountain

60% of the square is green.

First draw the square diagonal. From the Pythagorean theorem its length can be deduced as √10. That makes the square side √5 and the total area 5.

The two right triangles along the diagonal are similar because they have the same angles. They have side proportion 1 : 2. The large one has area 2/3 and the small one 1/6. Now the green area is 5/2+2/3-1/6=3.
