 1) A Message from the IMI Director

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to introduce you to a new collaborator, author of the comic strip that you may see below in "La viñeta matemática" section.

Jono Hey

In 2012, Jono set himself the challenge of explaining something about the world in a daily sketch. Over a decade later, he's still chipping away (now weekly) one sketch at a time. He's lived in Europe and the U.S., working across academia, design, product development, entrepreneurship, strategy and engineering and helping create two successful companies. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and a master's from the University of Bath. Sketchplanation's diversity draws from all these experiences and is now available in a book: Big Ideas Little Pictures.

I hope you enjoy his comic strips.

Thanks a lot Jono!

Ángel Manuel Ramos

 6) Math Puzzle

Puzzle sent by Kjartan Poskitt.
The solution will be provided in the next issue of Boletin del IMI.
Solution to last week's Math Puzzle, sent by Rik Tangerman and published on issue No. 120 of the Boletín del IMI:

Spider-Man: Solution

The circle area is 5π.

First, construct the angles α and β subtended at the circumference by the given chords. It is quite easy to see from the triangle interior angle sum that α+β=45°.

Now rotate the short chord all the way along the circle until it sits next to the longer chord. Their total angle subtended at the circumference is still 45°. Because they form a cyclic quadrilateral, the angle between the chords must be 135°.

From the Inscribed angle theorem it follows that the angle subtended at the centre is 90°. The combined chord HL therefore has length r√2. Applying the cosine rule in triangle HLF gives 2r2=4+2-√2cos(135)=10. The circle area follows.
