5) Math Puzzle
Puzzle sent by Kjartan Poskitt.
The solution will be provided in the next issue of Boletin del IMI.
Solution to last week's Math Puzzle, sent by Rik Tangerman and published on issue No. 118 of the Boletín del IMI:
The toucan: Solution
The angle α is 67,5°.
First extend the black hypotenuse to G. Angle chasing gives that it is perpendicular to the yellow hypotenuse. Because it is also a diameter, we know G is the midpoint of chord CD. This makes triangle CDF isosceles.
We also know from the congruency condition that triangle EFC is right isosceles. Combining the two findings we get that α – 45 = 90 - α, and therefore α = 67,5°.
