1) A Message from the IMI Director
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Prof. Per H. Enflo is a new Honorary Professor of IMI. He is a well-known Swedish mathematician in the field of functional analysis. Some of his crucial contributions to that field are the solutions to the basis problem, the approximation problem and the invariant subspace problem in Banach spaces, among others. Prof. Enflo has held various positions at renowned universities in the United States and Europe, with Kent State University being where he has held his latest position. Although he has since retired as a professor at Kent State University, he remains an active mathematician. In the last month of May, Prof. Enflo published a promising proof of the invariant subspace problem for Hilbert spaces in Arxiv and he announced it in Boletín del IMI Nº 91 (see https://doi.org/10.57037/
Prof. Per H. Enflo
Welcome to IMI Prof. Enflo!

2) Noticias IMI
27 November 2023. Four IMI members and four members of its Scientific Committee are in the lists of the most highly cited scientists worldwide, published by Stanford University. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field. The four IMI members mentioned are Juan Luis Vázquez Suárez, Julián López-Gómez, Jesús Ildefonso Díaz Díaz and Francisco Javier Montero de Juan. Also appearing in the same lists are Scientific Committee members Paul Rabinowitz, Simon Donaldson, Herbert Amann and Dikran Dikranjan.
23 November 2023. The Complutense University of Madrid published the list of approved applications for the ‘UCM 2022 Call for Research Project Financing Grants’. One of these grants was awarded to the Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute (IMI). Nirian Martín, a member of the IMI, is the principal investigator of the corresponding project entitled ‘Robust Statistical Inference Based on Distances for Mixed Linear Models’. Furthermore, José María Maroto, member of the IMI, is the principal investigator of the project entitled ‘Bioeconomic models of dynamic optimization, population dynamics and data assimilation techniques for sustainable fisheries management: transition dynamics', which has also been approved in the same call.
3) Activities from November 30 to December 8, 2023
5) Other planned activities

8) Math Puzzle
Solution
First extend the quarter to a full circle. Then reflect the large triangle in the diameter as shown. The angles on the left side of B add up to 180. Therefore, DE is a straight line.
From Thales we know that angle DEC is right. Now consider triangle BEC. It is a 30-60-90 triangle, and it is well known that the short side is exactly half the hypotenuse. So |CB|=2|EB|. The large triangle is therefore four times larger than the small one.
