Dear Colleagues,
We are very pleased to announce that we are starting a new section of the Boletín del IMI, called "Math Art". In this section we will publish images, pictures or videos that relate Art and Mathematics. Additionally, it’s a pleasure to introduce you to a new contributor, Rafael Araujo, who sends the drawing that inaugurates this section. As an architect by formation, he first developed his own techniques of conventional perspective from a very young age, and his interest was soon focused in the study of, mainly, polar geometrical series and sequences, represented graphically with the incorporation of natural subjects. For instance, butterflies & shells. He is currently a full-time freelance graphic artist. He points out that, against all reasonable logic, despite the mathematical style of his work, everything is done by hand, without the use of any kind of software whatsoever.
I hope you enjoy his drawings.

5 May 2023. Granting of a Thematic Network on Multicriteria Decision Making coordinated by IMI
In the 2022 call for Research Networks of the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Estatal de Investigación), the Thematic Network on Multicriteria Decision Making (Red Temática en Decisión Multicriterio) has been awarded, with IMI being the center coordinating it. The Network is structured into 10 groups, each of which integrates various nodes of the Spanish Multicriteria Decision Making Group (Grupo Español de Decisión Multicriterio), whose principal investigators are: Begoña Vitoriano (IMI, Network Coordinator), Antonio Jiménez (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), Amelia Bilbao (Universidad de Oviedo), Inés Couso (Universidad de Oviedo), Amparo Mármol (Universidad de Sevilla), Herminia Calvete (Universidad de Zaragoza), Francisco Ruiz de la Rúa (Universidad de Málaga), José María Moreno (Universidad de Zaragoza), Ana García Bernabéu (Universidad Politécnica de Valencia) and José Antonio Gómez-Limón (Universidad de Córdoba). |

Solution to last week's Math Puzzle, published on issue No. 88 of the Boletín del IMI:
The puzzle was: Two squares and two equilateral triangles. What fraction is hatched?
Solution:
First one can use the fourfold rotational symmetry of the two squares to draw two extra congruent equilateral triangles. Now setting all the internal line segments to have length 1, we can easily calculate the area of the four isosceles triangles along the large square sides: each has area sin(150°)/2=1/4.
So the non-hatched space is comprised of two equilateral triangles of side 1 plus a total area of 1, which is exactly the same as the hatched space. The hatched fraction is therefore ½. |
