Lecture and workshop at RMIT (12th November, Melbourne, Australia)
1 NOV 2018 - 06:57 CET
Prof Cristina Montiel presented a public lecture on "Fire to prevent and combat wildfire in Europe" in RMIT University (Melbourne, Australia), on 12 November 2018, organized in the frame of the European Project GEOSAFE.
This lecture introduced the main results obtained by the Research Group of the University Complutense of Madrid in the frame of the European Project FIRE PARADOX. First, Prof. Montiel presented the territorial specificity and diversity of the European continent for fire management. Second, she addressed the regulation of traditional practices of fire use for different land management purposes, and the state-of-the-art of the professional use of fire (prescribed burning and suppression fire). Finally, she highlighted the need to shift the European fire polices to cope with current and future challenges of megafires in the context of global change.
The main message of this lecture was a proposal of learning to live with fire, which means to focus on social preparedness and landscape resilience with a different fire management strategy.
