Esta asignatura aborda el estudio de los movimientos predominantes en la segunda mitad del s. XIX, realismo y naturalismo, como una respuesta al romanticismo, tanto en formas en prosa como poéticas y teatrales. Pese a que ni realismo ni naturalismo son movimientos consistentes o claramente delimitados, se intentará definir las características fundamentales de cada uno de ellos, examinando la obra de sus principales representantes, en conexión con diversos aspectos de la sociedad estadounidense de la época. Se estudiarán, por tanto, los autores y obras siempre en el contexto histórico, filosófico, científico, religioso y social de la segunda mitad del s. XIX en Estados Unidos.

This subject studies the main literary movements in the second half of the nineteenth century, Realism and Naturalism, as a response to Romanticism. It deals with fiction, poetry, and drama. Although Realism and Naturalism are not clearly defined as literary movements, this class will try to observe their essential features, examining the works by their most characteristic writers as well as diverse aspects in the American society. Thus, the writers and their works will be studied in their respective historical, philosophical, scientific, religious, and social contexts, which pertain to the second half of the nineteenth century in the United States.

El objetivo principal es mostrar a los estudiantes la historia literaria de los Estados Unidos desde 1850 hasta 1900, deteniéndose en los movimientos, autores y obras más representativos de ésta. La asignatura se articula en torno a ejes cronológicos y genéricos, y dada la extensión genérica mencionada, se ofrecerá una visión panorámica. Como objetivos específicos se espera que:

- Los alumnos sean capaces de ubicar y analizar, en su contexto, la creación literaria de los Estados Unidos en los periodos estudiados.
- Los alumnos entren en contacto con obras críticas fundamentales que articulan el estudio de la literatura de los Estados Unidos.
- Los alumnos articulen sus propias lecturas críticas de los textos, basándose siempre en el diálogo crítico ya existente, estimulando así la reflexión sobre la literatura y el contexto (geográfico, temporal, social y cultural) en que ésta se produce.

The main objective of this subject is to show students American literary history from 1850 to 1900, examining the most representative movements, writers, and works in this period. The class is structured following a chronological and genre pattern, so it will offer a panoramic view of the period. As part of the specific objectives:

-Students will be able to place and analyze, in its context, the American literary production from this period.

-Students will approach the essential critical works that study American literature.

-Students will read the texts critically on their own. This approach will be based on a critical dialogue that stimulates reflecting on literature and its geographical, temporal, social, and cultural context.

4) Regionalist Fiction. Female Writers: K. Chopin and E. Glasgow (South), S. O. Jewett and E. Wharton (New England), W. Cather (Midwest), Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

5) The Regionalist Awakening in the Old South and Midwest. Poetry in New England. The African American Renaissance and its Poetics: From Dunbar and McKay to Hughes.

6) Henry James: The Art of Fiction.
