El alumno deberá ser capaz de identificar y analizar los elementos estéticos que caracterizan la ficción en el postmodernismo anglonorteamericano, y de emitir juicios críticos sobre los textos narrativos, así como sobre la relación de éstos con el presente contexto sociocultural / The student will be able to identify and analyze the aesthetic elements characterizing Anglo-American postmodernist fiction, and to express critical judgments on the narrative texts discussed, as well as on their relation with the current socio-cultural context.

En el curso se estudiarán las distintas evoluciones de la ficción en los Estados Unidos desde la década de los cincuenta del siglo XX, teniendo en cuenta la difícil sistematización del periodo, en parte por la cercanía crítica respecto de obras y movimientos, pero también por la variedad de la producción narrativa en las últimas décadas y su diversificación en cuanto a aspectos como cuestiones de clase, raza o género. Se dedicará especial atención a la relación entre la sociedad norteamericana contemporánea (y sus valores estéticos, simbólicos, culturales, políticos, y morales) y las producciones literarias, estudiadas así en su contexto histórico, social, político e ideológico, y también en el contexto crítico de lo que se ha dado en llamar "la edad de la teoría". Se estudiará cómo el predominio de la teoría en el contexto crítico y la potente industria editorial y las nuevas condiciones de publicación y lectura han podido afectar la creación y evaluación de obras de ficción.

General requirements for admission to the degree

- Presentar a los estudiantes la ficción más relevante (en forma de novelas, relatos y otras formas) de las últimas décadas en los Estados Unidos, fomentando el análisis crítico de las principales tendencias literarias y sus obras y autores más representativos.

La evaluación tendrá un alto carácter práctico, valorándose, además de los resultados obtenidos en las pruebas que se lleven a cabo (60-70%), otras actividades como la realización de actividades y trabajos prácticos relacionados con los conocimientos adquiridos y/o las herramientas utilizadas (30-40%). Si el tamaño del grupo lo permite, la evaluación será continua y se basará en el debate en clase y trabajos escritos, así como en la realización de un examen final.

Evaluation will be based on the students' performance, and it will take into consideration both results in tests and exams (60-70%), and other requirements including in-class activities, and written work connected to knowledge and tools acquired in the course (30-40%). If the size of the group allows for it, assessment will be continuous and based on in-class debate, group work, individual written work, and a final exam.
