CE 17 (Módulo de Literatura en Lengua Inglesa, Materia principal 11). [Literatura de los Estados Unidos hasta 1850; Historia de los Estados Unidos de 1850 a 1900]. El alumno deberá ser capaz de identificar y analizar los elementos estéticos que conforman el canon literario de los Estados Unidos, emitir juicios críticos sobre el corpus literario de los Estados Unidos en relación con su contexto histórico y valorar su influencia en el contexto literario actual.

CE 17 (Module of Literature in English, Core Subject 11). [Literature of the United States until 1850; History of the United States from 1850 to 1900]. The student will be able to identify and analyze the aesthetic elements that make up the literary canon of the United States, to entertain critical judgments on the literary corpus in the United States in relation to its historical context, and assess its influence on the contemporary literary context.

 Estudio de la literatura de los Estados Unidos a partir de la historia y de la evolución de principalmente la prosa y poesía de sus primeros siglos (hasta 1850). Al examinar dichos géneros se trazará el contexto de relaciones sociopolíticas y culturales que han conformado la historia literaria de dicho período, así como la evolución específica de las formas literarias que manifiestan los textos seleccionados.
La historia literaria que se ofrece, así como el estudio de las obras y textos elegidos, debe subrayar adecuadamente la formación de la literatura norteamericana durante los períodos pre-colonial y puritano (1492-1776), el de la literatura de la nueva república (1776-1836) y del renacimiento romántico (1836-50).


Study of the literature of the United States, taking into consideration the history of the country and the evolution of literary forms, notably prose and poetry, during its first centuries until 1850. Through the analysis of these literary genres, it will be delineated the context of sociopolitical and cultural relations that have form the literary history and tradition of the United States.
The history of the US literature, as well as the evaluation of selected authors and their literary works, must duly taught to students, so that they can distinguish the literary production of the following historical periods: pre-colonial y puritan traditions (1492-1776), the writings of the new republic (1776-1836), and Romanticism and the so-called American Renaissance (1836-50).

 El objetivo principal es mostrar a los estudiantes la historia literaria de los Estados Unidos hasta 1850, deteniéndose en los movimientos, autores y obras más representativos de ésta. La asignatura se articula en torno a ejes cronológicos y genéricos, y dada la extensión temporal y genérica mencionada, se ofrecerá una visión panorámica. Como objetivos específicos se espera que:
1. Los/las estudiantes sean capaces de ubicar y analizar, en su contexto, la creación literaria de los Estados Unidos en los periodos estudiados.
2. Los/las estudiantes entren en contacto con obras críticas fundamentales que articulan el estudio de la literatura de los Estados Unidos.
3. Los/las estudiantes articulen sus propias lecturas críticas de los textos, basándose siempre en el diálogo crítico ya existente, estimulando así la reflexión sobre la literatura y el contexto (geográfico, temporal, social y cultural) en que ésta se produce.




The main objective of this course is to show students the literary history of the United States until 1850, and to discuss its most representative cultural movements, authors and their works. Due to the wide extension of this course in terms of historical times and the diversity of literary genres, it is only expected to provide an overview for the given period. These are the specific objectives of the course:
1. Students must be able to locate and to evaluate the literary production of the United States of the given historical period.
2. Students must be familiar with the most significant scholarly works used to study the literature of the United States
3. Students must be able to articulate their own critical readings of texts, so as to consider and explore the geographical, temporal, social and cultural contexts within which the literature of the United until 1850 is created.

 1. Literatura pre-colonial y colonial en Norteamérica: selección de textos producidos por exploradores británicos e hispanos y de textos de la tradición de los Native-American.
2. Tradiciones puritanas en Nueva Inglaterra, desde William Bradford y John Winthrop hasta Cotton Mather y Jonathan Edwards, desde la poesía de Ann Bradstreet hasta las Captivity Narratives.
3. La Ilustración y la ficción, la prosa política y autobiográfica de la nueva república hasta 1820, a través de textos de Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Brockden Brown, James Fennimore Cooper y Washington Irving.
4. Literatura del American Renaissance a partir de los textos centrales de Edgar Allan Poe, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne y Herman Melville. Estudio del Transcendentalismo (Raph W. Emerson y Henry D. Thoreau), el origen del feminismo estadounidense (Margaret Fuller), y el Underground Railroad con la escalada hacia la guerra: Frederick Douglass y Harriet Beecher Stowe.




1. Pre-colonial and colonial literature in North-America: selection of texts produced by British and Spanish explorers and the tradition of Native-American narratives
2. Puritanism and Puritan traditions of New England, from William Bradford and John Winthrop to Cotton Mather and Jonathan Edwards, from Ann Bradstreet’s poetry to Captivity Narratives.
3. The Enlightenment and the fiction, political and autobiographical prose of the new republic until 1820: selection of texts produced by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Brockden Brown, James Fennimore Cooper and Washington Irving.
4. The literature of the American Renaissance: selection of literary texts produced by Edgar Allan Poe, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. Study of Transcendentalism (Raph W. Emerson and Henry D. Thoreau), early feminism (Margaret Fuller), y the Underground Railroad towards the Civil War: Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe.

La evaluación tendrá carácter continuo. La calificación final se establecerá según la media ponderada de tres parámetros: seguimiento semanal del trabajo individual del alumno/a (valor relativo entre 10% y 20% de la calificación final), evaluación ensayos escritos por el alumno/a (valor relativo entre 20% y 30% de la calificación final) y resultado del examen final (entre un 50% y un 70% de la calificación final).

The continuous evaluation procedure for this course takes into consideration three parameters for grading purposes: class attendance and weekly individual work and activities requested to the student (10-20 %), the results of the final exam (50-70%) and the evaluation of a final essay (20-30%).
