El estudiante conocerá las fases históricas la lengua inglesa, sus principales características, los cambios más significativos y podrá identificar la época a la que pertenece un texto junto con su contexto histórico, cultural y lingüístico. El estudiante será capaz de redactar documentos, manejar información compleja, utilizar herramientas informáticas y hacer presentaciones, todo ello en lengua inglesa. Académicamente, el estudiante será capaz de comprender e integrar información procedente de diversas fuentes, y encuadrarla en distintas perspectivas teóricas. Actitudinalmente, el estudiante será capaz de desarrollar de una actitud reflexiva y crítica sobre las distintas fases de la evolución de la lengua inglesa tanto desde el punto de vista lingüístico como cultural, así como una actitud de convivencia y diálogo entre ideologías, géneros y etnias y desarrollando la corrección política.


The student will learn the historical stages of the English language, their most important features and changes. The student will identify the historical stage of a text together with its cultural, historical and linguistic context. The student will be able to write essays, manage complex information and data; use computer tools and give public presentations in English. From the academic point of view, the student will be able to understand and integrate information from different sources and frame them within different theoretical approaches. In relation to attitudinal competencies, the student will be able to develop acritical thinking attitude about the different stages of the evolution of the English language both, from a linguistic and a cultural perspective as well as to develop a dialogical and interacting attitude among the different ideologies, genres and ethnicities as well as developing skill of political correctness.

La metodología docente incluirá las siguientes estrategias:
1. Actividades basadas en el trabajo en clase que implique la práctica de análisis y contextualización de textos de distintas épocas.
2. Presentación, discusión y análisis de textos sobre diferentes temas relacionados con la evolución socio-cultural y lingüística de la lengua inglesa por parte del alumno.
3. Trabajo práctico (individual guiado o en grupo) en laboratorio informático.
4. Se estudiará también el uso de las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TICs).

The methodology includes the following strategies:
1. Activities based on class work. These imply the analysis and contextualization of texts from different stages in the evolution of the language.
2. Students’ presentations, discussions and analyses of texts related to the linguistic and socio-cultural evolution of the English language.
3. Presentation of an individual or group practical project.
4. Use of information and communication tools.

El objetivo fundamental del curso es proporcionar al estudiante una visión general de la evolución de la lengua inglesa desde sus orígenes hasta la época contemporánea.

The essential goal of the course is to provide the student with a general overview of the evolution of the English language from its origins up to nowadays.

El curso se centrará en la identificación de los periodos de la lengua inglesa habitualmente reconocidos y proporcionará una justificación para los mismos, tanto interna (cambios y características principales) como externa (contexto histórico-cultural en el que se desarrollan), atendiendo solamente a los cambios más significativos.

 

1. Conceptos fundamentales de la lingüística histórico-comparada y del cambio lingüístico.

2. El inglés entre las lenguas germánicas.

3. Orígenes de la lengua inglesa. Emigración de grupos germánicos a Inglaterra.

4. El inglés antiguo. Cultura y lengua

5. El inglés medio. Situaciones diglósicas y caracterización lingüística

6. inglés moderno. Debates metalingüísticos y caracterización lingüística

7. El inglés contemporáneo. Siglo XX y nuevas perspectivas de cambio.

 

The course Will be focused on the identification of the different stages of the English language generally acknowledged and on providing an internal (changes and main features) and an external (historical and cultural context) justification for those periods just based on the most significant changes.

1.     Fundamental concepts of comparative historical linguistics and language change.

2.     English among the Germanic languages.

3.     Origins of the English language: Migration of Germanic groups to England.

4.     Old English: Language and culture.

5.     Middle English: diglossia and linguistic features.

6.     Modern English: metalinguistic debates and linguistic features.

7.     Contemporary English: 20th century and new perspective of change.

 

La evaluación se llevará a cabo de forma continua. Aproximadamente del 60 al 70% de la evaluación recaerá en la realización de pruebas específicas, teniéndose también en cuenta (aproximadamente con un valor del 30 al 40% de la evaluación) la asistencia a las lecciones magistrales y a las tutorías, la realización puntual de las actividades prácticas de naturaleza y extensión diversa relativos a los contenidos del curso y la corrección y eficacia con que éstas se llevan a cabo y, en su caso, las presentaciones en clase.

The assessment will be continuous. Accomplishment of specific tasks will take approximately 60-70% of the final grade. The attendance to classes and tutoring hours, the fulfilment of practical tasks of diverse extension and nature related to the contents of the subject and the correction and efficacy of their fulfilment of those tasks and/or the class presentations will take approximately 30-40% of the final grade.
