 Esta asignatura ofrece una visión global de la literatura inglesa desde sus orígenes hasta finales del XVIII. A lo largo del curso se analizarán con detenimiento algunas de las obras clásicas de la poesía y prosa inglesas correspondientes a los períodos literarios medieval, renacentista e ilustrado. Se proporcionará al mismo tiempo a los estudiantes una serie de conocimientos históricos, literarios y críticos fundamentales sobre los autores y movimientos de estas épocas con objeto de que el alumno adquiera un sólido conocimiento teórico y práctico de la literatura y cultura inglesas de los siglos que comprende la asignatura.
 
An overview of English literature since its origins and up to the end of the XVIIIth century. The course will analyze some of the classic poetry and prose works written in England in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Students will as well be offered a series of theoretical and practical approaches to indiviudal authors and cultural movements in order to make sure they will be able to get a fully satisfying knowledge of the English literature and culture in these centuries.

El objetivo esencial que persigue el curso es el de acercar a los alumnos a la literatura medieval, renacentista e ilustrada de Gran Bretaña, desde los primeros textos conservados en inglés hasta las obras más significativas de las postrimerías del siglo XVIII. Se pretende familiarizar a los alumnos con los principales autores, obras y estilos que conforman los distintos períodos del corpus literario del Reino Unido hasta 1800, de forma que sean capaces de construir un discurso crítico razonado sobre la literatura inglesa de dichos períodos. Con objeto de lograr estos fines, se emplearán, entre otros, los siguientes procedimientos y estrategias: 

1. Familiarizar a los estudiantes con la historia de la literatura inglesa a través del estudio de sus textos y la asimilación de conocimientos históricos, literarios y culturales básicos.

2. Incentivar la capacidad del análisis razonado del estudiante en torno a diferentes obras del corpus literario inglés.

3. Iniciar a los alumnos en la lectura de textos críticos (artículos, monografías, etc) sobre literatura inglesa.

4. Desarrollar el juicio crítico personal de los alumnos hacia los textos analizados en la asignatura.

The main aim of the subject is to make it possible for the students to get closer to Medieval, Renaissance and Enlightened English literature, from the first found texts written in English to the most relevant works written in the XVIIIth century. Students are supposed to get to know the main authors, works and styles from the English literary history up to 1800, so they will be able to have a critical discourse on the English literary production in those centuries. Aiming at those goals, the following methods and strategies will be followed:
1. Make students familiarize with the history of English literature reading some of the most relevant texts and learning about historical, cultural and literary elements.
2. Encourage students' analytical abilities to deal with works from the English literary history.
3. Start students in the reading of critical texts (articles, periodicals, volumes and books) on English literature.
4. Developing students' individual critical analysis of those texts analyzed in the course.

6. Poesía Neoclásica: Dryden y Pope.

7. La novela: Henry Fielding, Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe y Laurence Sterne.

El proceso de evaluación continua tendrá lugar a través de varios elementos: Participación en clase y campus virtual, Proyectos y/o Presentaciones Orales y Exámenes: 3-6 horas
The continuous evaluation procedure will take place through various elements: In-Class and virtual campus Participation, projects and/or Oral Presentations, Exams: 3-6 hours
La evaluación tendrá un carácter práctico, valorándose, los resultados obtenidos en las pruebas/tareas que se lleven a cabo (60-70%), además de la realización de actividades y trabajos prácticos relacionados con los conocimientos adquiridos y las herramientas utilizadas (30-40%).
The evaluation will have a practical character, taking into consideration to the results obtained in the tests/tasks to be carried out (60-70%), as well as the realization of activities and practical works related to the acquired knowledge and the tools used (30 -40%).
