In the process of development of the doctoral thesis, the student will have as interlocutors:

  • Doctoral Service in the Student Secretary's Office of the Faculty of Economics and Business Science: in charge of administrative management; from enrollment in a program to the issuance of the Doctoral degree.
  • Academic Committee: responsible for the definition, updating, quality and coordination of the program, as well as the progress of research and training and the authorization of the presentation of the thesis.

  • Doctoral student's tutor: responsible for the adequacy of the training and research activity to the principles of the program; tutor and director may coincide.
  • Doctoral student's supervisor: he/she is the person in charge of conducting all the research tasks of the doctoral student.

The regulations concerning the development of the doctoral thesis can be found at the following link: regulations.

As stipulated in article 11.3 of R.D. 99/2011, once admitted to the doctoral program, each doctoral student will be assigned by the Academic Committee a tutor, a doctor with accredited research experience, linked to the lines of research of the program, who will be responsible for ensuring the interaction of the doctoral student with the Academic Committee. The Academic Committee, having heard the doctoral student, may modify the appointment of the tutor of each doctoral student at any time during the period of the doctoral program, provided that there are justified reasons.

The doctoral program will organize, after the enrollment process of the new doctoral students, a welcome session in which they will be informed of all the procedures to follow and where they will also be able to meet the members of the academic committee and the professors assigned to the program. In this session, in addition to the training activities, they will be informed about the scholarship and mobility options established in the program.

When the Academic Committee responsible for the Doctoral Program assigns a Thesis Supervisor, the student must register the doctoral thesis through the corresponding form. In addition, the student must submit the document “Documentary Commitment of Supervision of the Doctoral Student”, which establishes the functions of supervision of the tasks for the development of the thesis. Once this document has been signed by the representative of the Academic Committee, the tutor, the supervisor and the doctoral student, a copy will be deposited in the Academic Committee of the program, in the student secretary's office of the center and another copy will remain in the possession of the doctoral student. In the case of changing tutor or supervisor during the thesis, the corresponding form and the Annex of Modification of the Documentary Commitment must be submitted again.

In accordance with the provisions of article 11.4 of the aforementioned royal decree, the academic committee of the program will assign each doctoral candidate a doctoral thesis supervisor who may or may not coincide with the tutor referred to in the previous section. The Academic Committee, having heard the doctoral student, may modify the appointment of the doctoral thesis supervisor for each doctoral student at any time during the period of the doctoral program, provided that there are justified reasons.

Students must fill in the RAPI2 tool all the training activities as well as the indications of quality of the results of the thesis (articles, books or book chapters, presentations at conferences, etc. for more information).

On the dates established by the Doctoral School, the annual evaluation of the progress of the doctoral thesis will be carried out through the Research Plan and Activity Document.

The directors must evaluate the student's progress each academic year using the following form. THE DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE IN THE VIRTUAL CAMPUS OF THE DOCTORATE PROGRAM IN ADE.

    • INTERNATIONAL MENTION THESIS: international (NOT the person who has signed the international research stay of the PhD student) with “research experience” (equivalent to 1 six-year period in Spain). One of these experts could act as an international member of the doctoral thesis tribunal.
  • Document 3. Suitability report of each of the proposed members of the thesis committee. Propose to the Academic Committee 10 candidates (fill in suitability reports for each of them) to form part of the future doctoral thesis tribunal, taking into account:
    • They can be retired professors (as long as they have accredited research experience).
    • Gender parity

Once the Academic Committee reviews and approves the documentation:

  • The coordinator sends the doctoral thesis to be evaluated by the two evaluators chosen by the Committee (Document 4).
  • These evaluators have a period of 30 calendar days to make their evaluations.
  • Both reports will be sent by the coordinator to the doctoral student and tutors-directors so that they can proceed to make the suggested changes. Several possibilities:
    • Most favorable and unusual. No changes are proposed. Nothing should be done.
    • Favorable, but with minor changes. The doctoral student has a period of 15 days to make them: (i) modifying the doctoral thesis with the best proposals in another color; and (ii) making a report for the reviewer explaining all the proposed changes to answer his questions. The coordinator then returns it to the reviewers for them to judge the answers. If favorable, they will issue a new favorable report.
    • Unfavorable or Favorable with important changes. The doctoral student will have the necessary time (weeks, months) to address all the proposed changes.

Once this process has been passed, and both reports are positive, the doctoral student may begin STEP 1 (Beginning of the telematic deposit procedure) (Access to telematic deposit must be navigated identified: https://edoctorado.ucm.es/tramite-1-deposito-de-tesis-doctoral). Exceptionally, when the doctoral student has a tight term of permanence in the program, the Academic Committee, after reviewing and approving the documentation submitted, may allow the doctoral student to begin Step 1 in advance. From this moment on, the time limits and deadlines for the student's permanence in our program are PARALYZED.

Subsequently, STEP 2 and STEP 3, with the participation of the doctoral student, the academic secretariat of the Faculty and the Academic Committee (by delegation, the coordinator) and finally STEP 4 from the Doctoral School and the Vice-rectorate of the UCM.
Call for the Defense Ceremony. In case of telematic defense, a special procedure must be followed.
The UCM Doctoral Commission has agreed on February 27, 2024 the following DEPOSIT AND DEFENSE DEADLINES FOR THESIS DEPOSIT AND DEFENSE OF DOCTORAL THESIS FOR STUDENTS WHO EXHAUST PERMANENCY
