The White Stork is a charismatic, highly recognizable bird species that has coexisted with people since the Middle Ages. It is an icon of nature conservation and local culture in much of Europe, drawing significant public attention. It is also a species with a strong tradition of long-term population monitoring, not only by dedicated research groups but also by a large volunteer workforce of citizen scientists. Numerous field based studies have focused on abundance, reproductive success and population dynamics and have identified rapid changes in its demography and ecology over time. Recent technological developments have added specialist molecular, eco-toxicological, physiological and movement data allowing scientists to address diverse aspects of storks ecology, evolution and conservation.
