Beatriz Blasco Esquivias
Beatriz Blasco Esquivias is a professor of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she received an extraordinary PhD award in 1990, after completing her training at the Academy of Fine Arts of Spain in Rome. An expert in Modern Age art and architecture, she has developed lines of research on art theory, court art, art and gender, domestic spaces and everyday life.
Since 1991 she has been a visiting professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin, the University of Bari Aldo Moro, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Palermo, the University of Sienna - Arezzo and the Sapienza University of Rome. Author of numerous studies, her books include Las mujeres y las artes. Mecenas, artistas, emprendedoras, coleccionistas (ed.) (Madrid, Abada, 2020), Nuevo Baztán. La utopía colbertista de Juan de Goyeneche (Madrid, Cátedra, 2019); Introducción al arte barroco (Madrid, Cátedra, 2015); Arquitectos y tracistas (1526-1700): el triunfo del Barroco en la corte de los Austrias (Madrid, CEEH, 2013); La casa: evolución del espacio doméstico en España (Madrid, El Viso, 2006); Atlas Mundial de la Arquitectura Barroca (collaborative publication, Madrid, Electa, 2001) and ¡Agua va!: la higiene urbana en Madrid, (1561-1761) (Madrid, 1998). She has been honored with the Humanities Research Award (Fundación Caja Madrid, 1991), the Architecture and Urban Planning Award (Madrid City Council, 1992), the Award from the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Técnicos Forestales (2010) and the Villa de Madrid Award for Historical Research (2010).
She has curated, in Spain and Italy, the exhibitions Filippo Juvarra: De Messina al Palacio Real de Madrid (Ministry of Education and Culture, Madrid/Turin/Naples, 1994/1995/1998), El Arte en la Corte de Felipe V: Madrid y los Sitios Reales (Fundación Caja Madrid and Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 2002), Fernando VI y Bárbara de Braganza: Un reinado bajo el signo de la paz (Ministry of Culture and RABASF, Madrid, 2003), Palabras pintadas: 70 miradas sobre Madrid (Fundación Caja Madrid, Madrid, 2004), Museos para el conocimiento (UCM, Complutense Art Centre, 2017) and La Plaza Mayor. Portrait and Masque of Madrid (Madrid, Museum of History, 2018). She has also directed national and international research projects and has coordinated several programs of the Council of Europe and UNESCO, such as Atlas Mundial del Barroco. Arquitectura (1992-1996), La Plaza Eurobaroca (RAPHAEL European Program, 1998) and Husso Digital. La Ciudad Universitaria en realidad aumentada (UCM, International Campus of Excellence, 2011).
Currently, she directs the research project “Femenino singular. Las mujeres y las artes en la corte española en la Edad Moderna (Reinas, nobles, artistas y empresarias)”, (HAR2015-65166-P) and the research group UCM 971718 “La corte española. Arte, artistas y mecenas”. She is a member of the scientific committee of Collana Opus (Faculty of Architecture at the Sapienza University of Rome and Dottorato in Riqualificazione e Recupero Insediativo), Lexicon. Storie e architettura in Sicilia e nel Mediterraneo (Palermo, Italy), Annali del Barocco in Sicilia (Centro Internazionale di Studi sul Barocco in Sicilia) and the publishing company Arco Libros.
She has been vice-dean for Research and Cultural Extension, coordinator of the Heritage cluster at the Campus of International Excellence "Moncloa", director of the Department of Art History II, advisor to the vice-rector's office for Culture, Sport and University Extension, and coordinator of the Master's Program Advanced Studies in Museums and Historical-Artistic Heritage (2010-2020).
