Elena Martínez Caro es Profesora Titular de lingüística inglesa en el Departamento de Estudios Ingleses: Lingüística y Literatura de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid desde el año 2000 (en el entonces Departamento de Filología Inglesa). Es Máster en Lingüística por la Universidad de Reading (Inglaterra, 1989. Mención de Honor) y Doctora en Filología (Lingüística Inglesa) por la UCM (1995, Premio Extraordinario), y asociada al Departamento de Filología Inglesa de la UCM desde el año 1990 (como Becaria FPI). En el mismo departamento de la UCM, ha sido directora de departamento (2014-17) y secretaria académica (2003-07), así como secretaria académica del Grado en Estudios Ingleses (2012-14). Pertenece a la Junta de la Facultad de Filología como miembro electo desde abril de 2018 (2018-22, 2022-25).

Cuenta con 4 sexenios de investigación (último año 2023). Sus principales líneas de investigación son las relaciones entre gramática y discurso, la lingüística del texto y la gramática inglesa. Dentro de estas líneas generales, ha desarrollado su trabajo en las áreas más específicas de la estructuración de la información (funciones de foco y tópico) y la segmentación y organización del discurso (marcadores y unidades del discurso, y transiciones del discurso), la sintaxis del inglés y su relación con la semántica, la pragmática y el lenguaje evaluativo, entre otras, desde una perspectiva discursivo-funcional y a menudo contrastiva (inglés-español). En estas áreas, es autora de un libro sobre foco y énfasis en inglés y español (PPU, 1999) y, con Lachlan Mackenzie, una gramática de la lengua inglesa para hispanohablantes (Compare and Contrast. Comares, 2012). Otras publicaciones recientes destacadas incluyen artículos y capítulos sobre digresión en español e inglés (2024), marcadores discursivos como oh o gosh en inglés (2023 y 2019), construcciones como las demonstrative clefts en el inglés escrito (2022) y la insubordinada con ni que en español (con L. Alba-Juez, 2021), give como verbo soporte (con J. Arús-Hita, 2020) y funciones discursivas de las question tags en inglés (2020).

Ha participado en proyectos de investigación financiados sobre lengua y emoción (EMO-FUNDETT, IP L. Alba), anotación multidimensional de textos (MULTINOT, IP J. Lavid), la evaluación en diferentes tipos de textos (FUNDETT, IP L. Alba), evidencialidad e impersonalización (IP J. Marín) y tópico (IP A. Downing) y en la actualidad es miembro de los Grupos de Investigación consolidados FUNCAP (Lingüística funcional inglés-español y sus aplicaciones, IP J. Lavid) y CORALINGO (Lingüística, discurso y corpus: aplicaciones tecnológicas y didácticas, IP R. Hidalgo). Durante el curso 2004-05 llevó a cabo una investigación postdoctoral en el Departamento de Lengua y Cultura Inglesa de la Vrije University (VU) de Ámsterdam, bajo la supervisión del Profesor Mike Hannay. Como parte de su último año sabático en 2019,  realizó estancias de investigación en la Université Catholique de Louvain (Bélgica, con la Prof. Liesbeth Degand) y en la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara (UCSB, conla Prof. Marianne Mithun).

Elena Martínez Caro is (Tenured) Associate Professor at the Department of English Studies of Universidad Complutense de Madrid since 2000. She holds an MA degree in Linguistics from the University of Reading (UK, 1989, Distinction) and a PhD in English Linguistics from UCM (1995, Outstanding Thesis Award). In the English Department of UCM she has been the department head (2014-17) and academic secretary (2003-07), as well as academic secretary of the Degree of English Studies (2012-14). She is also an elected member of the Faculty Council (2018-22, 2022-25).

She has obtained 4 six-year periods of certified quality research (sexenios, last year 2023). Her main lines of research are the relations between grammar and discourse, text linguistics and English grammar. Within these lines, she has carried out research in the more specific areas of information structure (focus and topic functions) and discourse segmentation and organisation (discourse markers and units, and discourse transitions), English syntax and the interface with semantics, pragmatics and evaluative language, among others, from a functionalist and contrastive (English-Spanish) perspective. In these areas, she has authored a book on focus and emphasis in English and Spanish (PPU, 1999) and, with Lachlan Mackenzie, a grammar of English for Spanish speakers (Compare and Contrast. Comares, 2012). Other recent publications include articles and book chapters on the discourse markers oh and gosh in English (2023 and 2019), constructions such as the  demonstrative clefts in English writing (2022) and the ni que insubordinate in Spanish (with L. Alba-Juez, 2021), light give (with J. Arús-Hita, 2020), and the discourse functions of question tags in English (2020).

She has participated in funded research projects on language and emotion (EMO-FUNDETT, PI L. Alba), multidimensional text annotation (MULTINOT, PI J. Lavid), evaluation in different text types (FUNDETT, PI L. Alba), evidentiality and impersonalisation (PI J. Marín) and topic and topicality (PI A. Downing) and she is a member of the 'consolidated' research groups FUNCAP (English-Spanish functional linguistics and its applications; PI J. Lavid) and CORALINGO (Linguistics, discourse and corpus: technological and didactic applications; IP R. Hidalgo). In the year 2004-05, she carried out postdoctoral research at the English Department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) under the supervision of Prof. Mike Hannay. As part of her last sabbatical year in 2019, she was Visiting Scholar at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium (with Prof. Liesbeth Degand), and at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB, with Prof. Marianne Mithun).
