1st CLARIAH-CM Course Series for Training in Digital Tools and Methodologies
3 sessions, between the 28th February and the 25th April 2025
17 feb 2025 - 13:07 CET
Our node has launched the I CLARIAH-CM Course Series for Training in Digital Tools and Methodologies. This initiative seeks to offer periodic training cycles with practical workshops and theoretical introductions designed to explore digital tools and methodologies applicable to research in the Humanities.
In this first course series, we will focus on tools that integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in their processes, as these can be of great help to optimize the work of researchers.
General course details
- Location: Laboratory 1007 of Building E of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, equipped with computers to guarantee the correct development of the activities.
- Duration: 3 hours, from 10:00 to 13:00.
- Methodology: A brief theoretical introduction will be combined with practical activities aimed at consolidating the knowledge acquired. Participants will be able to work on their own projects or learn with the materials provided, with direct supervision and support from the trainer throughout the session.

Course 1: February 28th, 2025
- Title: Introduction to eScriptorium
- Abstract: This workshop introduces us to the automatic text transcription platform eScriptorium. After a theoretical and methodological presentation on automatic transcription techniques and their scientific, linguistic and philological implications, we will learn how to use the eScriptorium tool to transcribe handwritten or printed texts, from scratch or by making use of existing generalist models.
- Speaker: Matthias GILLE LEVENSON (Aix-Marseille Université).
Course 2: March 28th, 2025
- Title: Introduction to Transkribus
- Abstract: This workshop deals with the automatic transcription of old printed and handwritten documents with Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) applications. It is oriented towards digital text editing and computational analysis. It will consist of a more theoretical part and a more practical part.
- Speaker: Stefano BAZZACO (Università degli Studi di Verona).
Course 3: April 25th, 2025
- Title: Seeing and Remembering: AI in the Recognition of Entities and Iconographic Themes
- Abstract: Presentation of AI applied to the description of paintings and their restoration. The challenges posed during the development of the Saint George on a Bike project and the challenges posed with the current Large Language Models and Large Visual Models will be discussed. The contrast between seeing and remembering will be emphasized as a notion that distinguishes pre-ChatGPT and post-ChatGPT AI.
- Speaker: Joaquim Moré (Investigador independiente)
