Active protection of light alloys
The research group is currently working on the development of innovative smart-coatings for Al and Mg alloys, aiming to enhance their corrosion resistance and extend their service life. These efforts are centered on the design and optimization of conversion and anodic films, which are further functionalized with active corrosion properties. A wide range of corrosion inhibitors and encapsulating systems are being explored, with a particular focus on environmentally friendly or green alternatives that align with sustainability goals. One of the key areas of investigaation involves layered double hydroxides (LDH), which serve as versatile carriers for the controlled release of inhibitors. LDH-based systems are being integrated into the coatings to provide self-healing capabilities an prolonged protection. The use of eco-friendly inhibitors, such as plant-derived compounds and other non-toxic chemicals, is also being prioritized to reduce environmental impact while maintaining or enhancing performance.
