Selene Pérez García
In 2009, I earned my degree in Biological Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), and in 2011, I obtained a Master's degree in Immunology Research from the Faculty of Medicine at the same university. In 2008, I joined Dr. Rosa P. Gomariz’s research group, Molecular and Cellular Basis of Inflammatory/Autoimmune Diseases (910012), with a Collaboration Grant. I was able to continue my predoctoral training thanks to funding from the Formación de Profesorado Universitario Program (FPU). Later, in 2016, I obtained my Ph.D. in Biology under the supervision of Dr. Rosa P. Gomariz and Dr. Yasmina Juarranz, receiving the highest distinction, Summa Cum Laude, along with the European Doctorate mention.
During this stage, I conducted research visits in expert groups studying osteoarthritis and inflammatory diseases, including Dr. Christos Tsatsanis’s group at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Crete, Dr. Jordi Monfort’s group at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, led by Dr. Mary B. Goldring, thanks to a Boehringer Fellowship.
During my postdoctoral phase, I also completed research visits in the Rheumatology Research Group at the Institute of Biomedical Research of A Coruña (INIBIC), led by Dr. Francisco J. Blanco, with whom we are currently collaborating. Additionally, I am an active member of the Network for Inflammatory Diseases (REI), a member of the Spanish Society of Histology and Tissue Engineering (SEHIT) and the Spanish Society of Proteomics (SEProt), and I have the support of the Osteoarthritis Foundation International (OAFI).
Currently, my research focuses on osteoarthritis pathology and the effect of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) as a potential disease modulator, with a special emphasis on articular cartilage.
Teaching
My teaching career began in 2011 at the Department of Cell Biology and Histology at the Faculty of Biology, UCM. Since then, I have collaborated in practical teaching for the Biochemistry degree and have taught both theoretical and practical classes in the Biology degree, as well as in the inter-university Master’s program in Genetics and Cell Biology (UCM, UAM, UAH). Additionally, I have supervised several Introductory Research Projects, as well as various Bachelor's and Master's theses, and I am currently co-supervising a Ph.D. thesis. Furthermore, I have participated in multiple Teaching Innovation Projects and completed various Teacher Training Courses. I am currently a member of the CDU Teaching Network (Comunidad Docente Universitaria de Aprendizaje Profundo) at UCM. Moreover, I have served as an advisor in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, working with UCM students.
My teaching experience led to my appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Histology in 2021, where I currently work. Additionally, I hold accreditations for Associate Professor, Private University Professor, and Full Professor.
