Raúl Villanueva Romero
In 2015 I graduated in Biology from the Autonomous University of Madrid. A year later, at the same university, I obtained a Master's degree in Biotechnology, within the international master's programme in Molecular Biosciences. In 2017, I joined Dr. Gomariz's group as a PhD student, under the supervision of Dr. Yasmina Juarranz and Dr. Irene Gutiérrez. During the course of my PhD, I carried out visits and research stays in national centres such as the CNB in Dr. Mario Mellado's group and the research institute of the Hospital 12 de octubre, in Dr. José Luis Pablos' group. In 2021 I completed an international stay in the laboratory of Dr Morisset-Lopez, at the Centre de Biophysique Moléculaire of the CNRS, in Orleans (France), thanks to an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship. In 2022, I obtained my PhD in Biology, with International Mention.
My research has been based on the study of the potential of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) as an immunomodulator of CD4 T cells, focusing my work mainly on the expression, localisation and signalling of its receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2, both belonging to the GPCR family. I am an active member of the Inflammatory Diseases Network (REI) and a member of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM).
Teaching
I started my teaching experience in 2017, in the Department of Cell Biology and Histology of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the UCM, participating in practical teaching of the degree in Biology and the degree in Biochemistry. Since 2024, I am part of the same department as Lecturer.
