Irene Gutiérrez Cañas
I hold a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Alcalá (UAH) and completed a predoctoral research stay at the Université de Marseille II through an Erasmus scholarship. My doctoral thesis was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UAH under the supervision of Mª José Carmena Sierra and Yasmina Juarranz Moratilla. Subsequently, I carried out a three-year postdoctoral stay in the Rheumatology Laboratory at Hospital 12 de Octubre, under the supervision of José Luis Pablos Álvarez.
In 2007, I joined the Department of Cell Biology and Histology with a postdoctoral contract from the Carlos III Health Institute. Since 2018, I have been a Senior Lecturer, and throughout these years, my research has focused on the regulatory role of VIP in the immune system. Our work primarily addresses musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases, with a focus on the modulation of different cell types present in the joint, such as fibroblasts and synovial macrophages, T lymphocytes, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and chondrocytes. Additionally, I participate in science comunication activities on social media and in schools and high schools.
Teaching
I began collaborating in teaching activities during my predoctoral stage at UAH. At UCM, I have participated in teaching both mandatory and elective subjects in the Biology and Biochemistry degree programs, as well as in the Master's programs in Genetics and Cell Biology and Health Biology.
Management
I have served as the coordinator of the Cell Biology and Histology course and as the first-year coordinator. Additionally, I have been the Coordinator of the PhD Program in Biology and am a member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Outside the university, I am part of Commission 5 of the ANECA Academia program.
