Vanessa Andrés Guerrero is an Associate Professor in Pharmaceutics at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where she is part of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Food Technology and a member of the Innovative Pharmaceutical Systems in Ophthalmology (InnOftal) research group. She is also affiliated with the Institute of Industrial and Galenic Pharmacy (IUFI-UCM) and the Sanitary Research Institute of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital (IdISSC).
Prof. Andrés Guerrero obtained her Pharmacy degree from the University of Alcalá. She later completed her Ph.D. with European Mention in Pharmacy at UCM in 2011, under the supervision of Prof. Rocío Herrero-Vanrell and Prof. Irene Teresa Molina Martínez, with a focus on topical ophthalmic formulations for glaucoma. During her doctoral studies, she gained international experience as a predoctoral fellow at the Centre for Drug Research in Helsinki, Finland, under the direction of Prof. Arto Urtti.
Following her Ph.D., Prof. Andrés Guerrero worked as a postdoc on the PANOPTES project under the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Union, which focused on peptide-based nano- and microparticles for ocular drug delivery. From 2014 to 2017, she was a Research Scientist in the Ophthalmology Department at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, directed by Prof. Julián García Feijóo, where she currently coordinates the translational research.
Her research expertise lies in ophthalmic drug delivery, specializing in the design, development, and evaluation of innovative ocular formulations using biodegradable micro- and nanosystems that control the release of active substances for topical, periocular, and intraocular applications. Her work significantly advances treatments for ocular diseases such as glaucoma.
In addition to her academic responsibilities, she actively participates in research projects funded by both public and private entities. She is involved as a team member and principal investigator in various publicly funded research projects, industry-funded initiatives, and university-industry contracts under Article 60. Her collaborations with industry focus on developing advanced drug delivery systems tailored to the needs of patients and pharmaceutical companies.
For students interested in working with Prof. Andrés Guerrero, she currently supervises and advises the work of undergraduate (TFG) and master's students (TFM), external internships, as well as extracurricular internships, doctoral candidates, and visiting researchers, offering guidance and expertise in pharmaceutical research and innovation in ophthalmology.
