FORTUNA RESTAURADA. PROCESOS Y NARRATIVAS DE RESILIENCIA DE LAS ÉLITES DE LA MONARQUÍA HISPÁNICA (1500-1725) (Referencia PID2023-149388NB-I00) Vigencia 2025-2028
En el presente proyecto, que se concibe como continuación de iniciativas anteriores centradas en el estudio de las élites nobiliarias, financieras y burocráticas de la Monarquía Hispánica, pretendemos ocuparnos del análisis de los procesos de resiliencia de las élites que se derivan de las respuestas ofrecidas por individuos, familias, grupos o corporaciones a situaciones adversas a sus intereses, así como de las narrativas entendidas lato sensu como estrategias culturales construidas ex profeso para combatir sus efectos negativos en el plano reputacional. Nuestro objetivo prioritario se centra, por tanto, en el análisis de las capacidades y mecanismos de resistencia
desarrollados por las élites en escenarios desfavorables y lesivos y diseñados para revertir sus resultados y restaurar el statu quo previo.
Nos interesa estudiar y comprender de qué manera las élites en la jerarquía de escalas que permite el acercamiento a esta realidad desde lo individual y lo colectivo utilizaron el fracaso como una oportunidad para rehacerse o reinventarse; como un catalizador necesario para propiciar cambios y transformaciones dirigidos a restaurar lo perdido. El proyecto se articula en torno a dos grandes líneas de análisis organizadas a partir de objetivos generales dirigidas a estudiar, de un lado, los medios y estrategias (sociales, económicas, etc) movilizados al objeto de lograr una resolución favorable de situaciones adversas y su grado de efectividad, y del otro a identificar y
examinar las formas y usos que adoptaron las narrativas y discursos propios de la comunicación escrita, oral y visual fabricados por las élites para justificar, manipular o reescribir la historia de tales sucesos y ofrecer una visión autocomplaciente del resultado de estos procesos. Precisamente, en el nuevo proyecto cobra especial relevancia el análisis crítico de las fuentes ego-documentales, fabricadas con ese propósito, en el estudio de las formas y usos políticos propios de la comunicación escrita (manuscrita e impresa) de las élites en contextos de desprestigio, insolvencia o hundimiento. Con el ánimo de conocer en profundidad el alcance de los procesos de resiliencia protagonizados por las élites, ha de considerarse en toda su dimensión la movilización de una propaganda específica al servicio de sus intereses diseñada mediante una genuina narrativa (self-narrative, en expresión afortunada acuñada por Claudia Ulbrich), definida a partir de las experiencias de individuos que escribieron sobre sí mismos o sobre sus familias y casas condicionados por sus entornos y circunstancias o que encargaron hacerlo a otros con el ánimo de construir un relato interesado y favorable.
RESTORED FORTUNE. PROCESSES AND NARRATIVES OF RESILIENCE OF THE ELITES OF THE SPANISH MONARCHY (1500-1725) (Project reference PID2023-149388NB-I00) Vigencia 2025-2028
In the present project, which is conceived as a continuation of previous initiatives focused on the study of the noble, financial and bureaucratic elites of the Spanish Monarchy, we aim to analyse the processes of elite resilience derived from the responses offered by individuals, families, groups or corporations to situations adverse to their interests, as well as the narratives - understood lato sensu as cultural strategies - constructed expressly to combat their negative reputational effects. Our main objective, therefore, is to analyse the capacities and mechanisms of resistance developed by elites in unfavourable and damaging scenarios and designed to reverse their results and restore the previous status quo.
We are interested in studying and understanding how elites - in the hierarchy of scales that allows us to approach this reality from the individual and the collective - used failure as an opportunity to remake or reinvent themselves; as a necessary catalyst to bring about changes and transformations aimed at restoring what was lost. The project is structured around two main lines of analysis - organised on the basis of general objectives - aimed at studying, on the one hand, the means and strategies (social, economic, etc.) mobilised in order to achieve a favourable resolution of adverse situations and their degree of effectiveness, and on the other at identifying and examining the forms and uses adopted by the narratives and discourses - typical of written, oral and visual communication - fabricated by the elites to justify, manipulate or rewrite the history of such events and offer a self-congratulatory vision of the outcome of these processes. Precisely, in the new project, the critical analysis of ego-documentary sources, fabricated for this purpose, takes on special relevance in the study of the forms and political uses of written communication (handwritten and printed) of the elites in contexts of discredit, insolvency or collapse. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the scope of the processes of resilience of the elites, the mobilisation of a specific propaganda in the service of their interests, designed through a genuine narrative (self-narrative, in the felicitous expression coined by Claudia Ulbrich), defined from the experiences of individuals who wrote about themselves or their families and homes conditioned by their environments and circumstances or who commissioned others to do so in the spirit of constructing an interested and favourable narrative.
