“Investigating cannabinoid function in the nervous system:
mechanism of action and biomedical implications”

CannaLatan: Iberoamerican network of cannabinoid research
Sept 8-10th Universidad de Sao Paulo, Riberao Preto (Brazil)

Three full days’ course oriented to training scientists (PhD, post-doc level) of biomedical areas
interested to gain updated information of the current knowledge on the endogenous
cannabinoid system and its role in physiological and pathological regulation of the nervous
system, the mechanism of action of plant-derived cannabinoids, and their most immediate
implications in health and disease. The school content is oriented to familiarize the participants
with experimental approaches and research strategies in the cannabinoid field. Hence students
will participate in experimental modules of current methodologies used for cannabinoid research
and neurochemistry. During the course students will develop and present their own research
proposal and participate in a session for professional development and career planning.
The school will be a satellite event of the FALAN meeting (Belem, 14-17th, 2020) and
hence it provides an excellent opportunity for improving scientific development and professional
activities of training researchers worldwide but with particular emphasis on the Latin-American
and Caribbean area.

Program

DAY 1. Plenary lecture.
Module I- Cannabinoid actions in the CNS. Neuromodulation, neuroprotection and neuronglial
crosstalk.
Experimental module I- Behavioural models commonly used in cannabinoid research. Motor
function, cognition, anxiety/depression, psychosis.
Project planning.

DAY 2 Cannabinoid signalling in the injured brain. CNBs and cognition. Psychosis and
neuropsychiatric disorders. CBD and depression.
Experimental module II. Characterization of neuronal activity (patch clamp electrophysiological
studies), studying degeneration and neuroprotection (confocal microscopy)
Project planning and professional development.

DAY 3. Therapeutic implications of cannabinoid actions. The reality of cannabinoids in the
clinics. Developing a medicament from the plant to the bedside.
Students project proposal.
