Science for the lay audience/Divulgacion cientifica
A. PUBLIC LECTURES AND RELATED ACTIVITIES IN MADRID
1977-1992
Starting January 29, 1977, Professor Manuel G. Velarde (first as a Faculty member of Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and, later, with the Spanish Open University,UNED) has organized about 30 Series of Public Lectures held at various places in Madrid (High Schools and Cultural Centers; in particular, at Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid and at Ateneo de Madrid). Entitled Frontiers of Science, their motto/leitmotif was Science is Part of Culture. A precursor Series on the Frontiers in Physics took place May 1973 in the Lecture Hall of Sociedad de Estudios y Publicaciones, sponsored by Banco Urquijo. Several other series, specifically sponsored by ADAE, were devoted to Science and Technology for the Benefit of Mankind (Engineering in the Industry, Agriculture, and at home). Other sponsors were ACHNA, PHYWE, UNED, MEC, etc. Altogether the number of Public Lectures was over 100. Special actions: a One-week Astronomy lecture series and exhibit devoted to the Max-Planck Calar Alto (Almeria) Observatory, March 20-27, 1990; a Two-Day Workshop and Lectures (scientists, writers, and chefs) on Olive Oil, December 3 and 4, 1990 (3rdInternational Olive Oil Year); and a DAY IN MEMORIAM Professors Blas and Nicolas CABRERA, attended by their grand-son and son, respectively, Prof. B. CABRERA (Stanford Univ.), May 7, 1991. With UNED, Prof. Velarde conducted for several years a radio programme "Scientific Culture" (News, Interviews, etc.) and for a year a TVE-2 weekly programme for UNED students (over a hundred thousand).
1993-1994
The years 1993 and 1994, the BBV Foundation sponsored a Chair of Physics/Catedra de Fisica at the Ateneo de Madrid, headed by Prof. Velarde (then with Universidad Complutense de Madrid), where, on the one hand, two Series of Public Lectures (24 altogether) were organized for the lay audience and, on the other hand, many Tutorial Lectures with Demonstrations and Film Shows were delivered for High School Students and Teachers (Topics included Classical and Relativistic Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Chaotic dynamics, Chemical Reactions, Computer Assisted Demonstrations, and Optics with a Laser). As a by-product, a Lab. Kit for Optics with a Laser (including diffraction by a hair and red blood cells, Michelson interferometry, etc.) was produced (with High School Prof. R. Fernandez Cruz) first for Leybold-Didaciencia, then for ENOSA and, presently, it is available in the market with Tecnologia y Sistemas Didacticos (a subsidiary of a French company). Chairs/Catedras at the Ateneo de Madrid were popular at the end of XIX Century, and holders of such Chairs included S. Ramon y Cajal, J. Echegaray, E. Leon Ortiz, D. Cortazar, E.Saavedra, J. M. Madariaga, M. Anton, etc. [Ref.: M. G. Velarde: Ciencia para la Ciudadania, Rev. Esp. Fisica 7 (1) (1993) 74-76].
B. LA BARRACA DE LA CIENCIA
In 1996-97, the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science sponsored a Series of Public Lectures with demonstrations delivered by Prof. Manuel G. Velarde, as an itinerant lecturer, in various places in Spain (Provinces of Teruel, Madrid, Cordoba, Caceres, Lugo, Alicante and Badajoz) under the heading "La Barraca de la Ciencia". This action was the continuation of an activity, started in 1980, that for more than fifteen years brought Prof. Velarde and collaborators all over Spain. Hundreds of lectures with demonstrations were delivered at High and Elementary Schools, Cultural Centers and Town Halls [Ref. M. G. Velarde: A Decade of Science for the People in Spain, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Atti dei Convegni Lincei 83 (1990) 155-163; Una decada de divulgacion cientifica enEspana: La Barraca de la Ciencia, Arbor nº 530 (1990) 35-48].
