Background
Javier Martín-Chivelet (Madrid, 1964) is full Professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) since 2008. His teaching and research fields are paleoclimatology, sedimentology and basin stratigraphy. Javier studied Geological Sciences at the UCM. In 1992 he completed his PhD at the Institute of Economic Geology (CSIC-UCM) in the field of stratigraphy and sedimentary basin analysis. His dissertation focused on Cretaceous carbonate platforms in the Betic Ranges, SE Spain. In fall 1991 he joined the Department of Stratigraphy at the UCM, as an assistant professor, and in 1997 he was appointed a senior lecturer in the field of sedimentary basin geology. During his career, he has spent two sabbaticals. The first one was at the University of California - Riverside (1995-96) where he worked with the carbonate research group (D. Osleger and I.P. Motañez) on Cambrian Platforms in the Cordilleran margin (SW USA). The second was at the University of Minnesota (2008), where he worked with L.R. Edwards team on radiometric dating of Quaternary speleothems. Current research interests include: Speleothems and caves as high-resolution records of climate change; Carbonate platform sequence stratigraphy; Event stratigraphy in marine sequences; and Stable Isotopes in carbonates. He was a member of the editorial board of "Sedimentary Geology" during 1998-2011, and currently is co-editor of "Journal of Iberian Geology". During the last five years, he has been actively participating in the development of national research programmes in Spain, including the FPU programme for pre-doctoral fellowships, and the National Plan of RDI for Earth Sciences (MINECO).
