Emma Dafouz Milne
Emma Dafouz is Associate Professor of English Linguistics in the Department of English Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. Her research experience focuses mainly on the study of the English language in educational contexts, classroom discourse, the teaching and use of English in higher education in the era of internationalisation and the design of language policies. The aim of here work is to examine and explain the growing internationalisation of education in general, and higher education in particular, and its impact both on teaching practices and on the development of language policies. As a member of the Spanish Rectors’ Conference (CRUE), within the subgroup of Linguistic Policies (from 2014-2019), she was co-author of the framework document “Políticas lingüísticas y la internacionalización de la universidad española".". She also acted as Advisor to the UCM Vice-Rector's Office for International Relations for five years (2014-19).
As Chief Investigator (CI), Ms. Dafouz directed the INTER-LICA project, La internacionalización de la educación superior en los grados bilingües:: Análisis de los retos lingüísticos, culturales y académicos, financiado por el MINECO (FFI2013-41235-R). She was also responsible for three projects financed by the Community of Madrid (CCG07- UCM/HUM-2602, PR1/06-14457-B) and the Banco de Santander (GR60/09) and currently directs the SHIFT project Understanding Internationalisation of Higher Education from the Student Perspective: A Longitudinal Examination of Disciplinary Literacies in English-medium education (PID2019-103862RB-100). At the international level, she participated in seven European projects, three of the most recent being: ConCLIL (Conceptualising Content and Language Integrated Learning) funded by the Academy of Finland (2011-2014); IntlUni: The challenges of the multilingual and multicultural learning space at the International University (526646- LLP-1-2012-1-DK-ERASMUS-ENW), and EQUiiP: La calidad educativa en las universidades internacionales (2016-1_KA203-022921).
She also published articles in high-impact journals such as Applied Linguistics, English for Specific Purposes, International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education, Modern Language Journal, Language and Education, or System, as well as in leading publishers such as Benjamins, Peter Lang, Multilingual Matters, or Rodopi. Her most recent publication, Roadmapping English-medium education in the Internationalized University (2020) in Palgrave-Macmillan, proposes a sociolinguistic theoretical model to examine the use of the English language in university education at the global level in a holistic, dynamic and critical way.
Ms. Dafouz acted as a reviewer for both national and international research projects (ANEP, Santander-UCM Research Projects, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Dutch Association for Scientific Research (NWO)).
She also belongs to the editorial board of various academic journals (Classroom Discourse, Routledge Studies in English-Medium Instruction, ELIA, Atlantis, the European-American Journal of Applied Linguistics and Languages) and acted as a plenary lecturer at different universities such as Gothenburg , Porto, Kaunas, Bordeaux, Thessaloniki, Colombia and Copenhagen.
