Antonio Alvar Ezquerra
Antonio Alvar Ezquerra (Granada, 1954) is Professor of Latin Philology at the University of Alcalá (1996-), after having been Professor at the University of Alicante (1994); he has also developed his activity as a professor and researcher in the Complutense University ―where he obtained his PhD in Classic Philology in 1979― and the Autónoma University of Madrid. During fifteen years he was the Director of the Department of Philology of the University of Alcalá, from 1984 to 1988 Director of the Library and between 1999 and 2002, Vice-Chancellor at the same University; from 2000 to 2008 he was President of the Spanish Society for Classical Studies ―for which he had previously been Vice-Secretary and Secretary―. He is a member of various national and international scientific societies and forms part of the Editorial Board of several national and international indexed journals of his speciality. He was the Spanish correspondent of L’Année Philologique for several years. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fundación Pastor de Estudios Clásicos.
As a result of his research activity, developed not only in Spanish universities, but also in universities in the US, France and Belgium, it would be worth mentioning his Doctoral Thesis, Acercamiento a la poesía del humanista Alvar Gómez de Castro, which was recognised with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award of the Complutense University and the Award of the Spanish Society for Classical Studies (1980); his Bibliografía de los Estudios Clásicos en España (1987 and subsequent years); his translation of the complete works of the Latin poet from the 4th century Decimus Magnus Ausonius, which was awarded by the Spanish National Prize for Translation by the Ministry of Culture in 1992; and his books Poesía de amor en Roma (1993), La Universidad de Alcalá de Henares a principios del siglo XVI (1996), Exilio y elegía latina entre la Antigüedad y el Renacimiento (1997), De Catulo a Ausonio. Lecturas y lecciones de poesía Latina (2009), Ars Amandi en Grecia y Roma (2009), Historia de la Universidad de Alcalá (2010), La vida a escena: ayer y hoy del teatro clásico (2015), La Biblia Poliglota Complutense en su contexto (2016),"Siste, viator": La epigrafía en la Antigua Roma (2019), etc.
Additionally, he is the author of numerous studies and translations, about themes and authors of his speciality, published in diverse Spanish and foreign publishing houses and scientific journals. He has given lectures and monographic courses in several research centres and universities in Spain, the US, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, France and Latin American countries.
