FULL NAME: Nuria Calvo Cortés
POSITION AT UCM: Profesora Permanente Laboral (Senior Lecturer)
CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS: My main interest is English historical linguistics, especially the Late Modern English period. I am interested in the linguistics analysis of text written in English in the 18th and 19th century, using both large and small corpora. I am currently working on the transcription and analysis of linguistic features of letters and petitions written by lower classes in England in the mentioned period. My focus is on the grammatical and pragmatic features of such letters, as well as on the socio-historical aspects of the period.
PhD SUPERVISION EXPERIENCE: I have supervised two doctoral theses, which have been successfully defended, one on codeswitching in Facebook and the other on Australian English in the 18th and 19th century. i am currently supervising a PhD student working on some sociolinguistic and grammatical features of school logbooks in East Anglia (UK) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
I WOULD WELCOME DISSERTATION PROPOSALS FROM CANDIDATES WORKING ON: any aspect regarding the English language of the 18th, 19th and 20th century in any variety of the English language round the world and their evolution. Also, I would be happy to supervise students who want to analyse present day English and are interested in cognitive linguistics, particularly motion situations and metaphors, as well as corpus-based studies on grammatical or pragmatic aspects.
