I am an evolutionary biologist interested in understanding the processes by which organisms adapt and diversify in novel environments. I study these processes in four general domains: (1) evolution in island systems, (2) expansions of organisms on a global scale, (3) adaptation to climate and climate change, and more recently, (4) evolution and adaptation in urban systems. I approach my research from multiple methodological approaches including molecular phylogenetics, functional morphology, spatial ecology, and genomic analyses. I work on multiple groups of organisms, from reptiles and birds to plants. Apart from these four main lines of research, I am also very interested in contributing to the taxonomic knowledge of the groups of organisms in which I work.

In each of my research lines I highlight the following specific projects.

1. Evolution and diversification in reptiles and plants of Madagascar and islands of the Indian Ocean.

2. Evolution and diversification of corvids and parrots at a global scale.

3. Adaptation and diversification of birds and reptiles along latitudinal and altitudinal climatic gradients.

4. Adaptation of magpies (Pica pica) to urban environments in the Iberian Peninsula.
