Irene Muñoz

Lecturer

My research interests focus on evolutionary biology, population genetics and conservation biology, using pollinating insects as model organisms. I am interested in the study of the molecular characterisation of insular bee populations (Apini, Bombini), the analysis of the introduction of alien bee subspecies and their subsequent introgressive hybridisation, and studies on biogeography, phylogeny and conservation of wild bees. I have recently initiated a new line of pollinator population genomics through the analysis of SNP markers and whole genome data, by identifying positive selection in the Iberian honey bee (Apis mellifera iberiensis).

Teaching

My recent teaching activity in the Degree in Biology and Geology has focused on practical aspects of the subjects Zoology and Biology for Geologists respectively. Previously I have given theoretical and practical teaching in other institutions on biology and beekeeping, as well as sampling methods and molecular ecology techniques.
