Design and implementation of wildlife monitoring programs
We have made our professional-standard expertise in monitoring techniques to different stakeholders. These are some outcomes of this initiative:
Madrid bird wintering atlas 1999-2001. A project developed as a member of the SEO/Monticola Ornithological Group. [Download full text in Spanish]
Bird monitoring scheme of the Hoces del Riaza Natural Park. Between 2007 and 2011 we designed and implemented a bird monitoring program for this breathtaking nature reserve located in central Spain. We developed a scheme in which annual variation in habitat quality (most importantly fruit abundance as a critical resource for wintering bird populations) could be easily scored by technicians in charge of bird counts. This strategy was proven to increase the information value of the monitoring program as a whole. This technical assistance gave feedback to our research lines on wintering birds, and its outcome was communicated in an invited talk (Pérez-Tris 2010. A different perspective on the monitoring of migratory birds) in the 18th Conference of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC).
